ABOUT THE ARTIST
(written by me, for the artist, who is also me... coincidence?)
I remember the second I wanted to be an artist. I was four years old coloring in my Snoopy coloring book during pre-school. I decided that the sky should be colored purple and not "traditional blue." (oddly enough that isn't a real crayon name, but for the purposes of this story lets say it does exist.) A few minutes later my teacher informed me that I made a poor color choice for the sky because, "...the sky isn't purple, it's blue."
From that moment I began looking at things from a totally different angle. It wasn't until I was seven when the artist path really kicked in. I was watching the "Star Wars Christmas Special" (1978) on TV, and when Bea Arthur started singing with the Cantina Bar creatures, I knew right there and then that I had to start drawing everything Star Wars... you know.. to suppress memories of watching that program as well as to quell future rage against George Lucas for destroying the franchise 21 years later.
When I was eleven, I was the youngest person to be admitted into a continuing education college art class. By twelve I was winning art awards at my school. At fifteen I was allowed to paint a mural on the cafeteria wall at my junior highschool. By seventeen I was paid by other students to create their art projects for class, which was great because it forced me to vary my style and skill level to match that of the other students. No one was ever caught and I made a decent amount of money doing it.
After highschool I was confident (or cocky) enough that I only applied to one art college. I was accepted into the Memphis College Of Art but had to drop out after one semester due to financial reasons. (ah the starving artist life begins early!) From that point I decided to train myself to become a graphic designer as I worked various non-art related jobs. Since then I've worked as a designer for small design houses as well as Anheuser Busch. I also continue to do freelance work for various clients around town.
Currently, I'm a stay at home dad, married with one son and still living in the St. Louis, Missouri, area.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
(also written by me, but you've probably already figured that out.)
Much of my art is focused on the internal struggles that take place under the surface of consciousness. Aspects of yourself that you don’t notice, or refuse to acknowledge, until you look inward. By creating this environment within my art, I attempt to bring a more cerebral point of view that is not just eye candy on a wall.
I intentionally incorporate several layers into my art, allowing you to find something new with each viewing. A casual glance won’t reveal much, but the longer you study the art, the more you’ll get out of it. I never spoon feed the message, which allows you to get something out of it based on your own experiences.
